At 18, Ms Matheson decided to earn some extra money by selling her homemade cakes at a farmers' market, and word quickly spread about the quality and taste of her offerings.

After a period of inundation with orders and special requests, she decided to get her kitchen registered from home.

'So many of my friends wanted to place orders for desserts, and I started posting photos on Facebook to build a customer base,' Ms Matheson told Daily Mail Australia.

What may have started out as a 'little business' from her mothers kitchen is now a force to be reckoned with

'A lot of these customers started coming back regularly to buy again and again, and that's when I realised I had the makings of a little business.'

Christened Cake Creations by Kate, Ms Matheson revealed the Point Cook based company now employs 20 staff and is on track to make $1.6 million by the end of 2018, all before her 21st birthday.

Ms Matheson's incredible achievement is all the more impressive given she has no formal qualifications in baking.

'I haven't completed anything formally - I started studying a patisserie certification, but I got injured before I could complete the course,' she said.

But it's clear to see her talent and passion for creative cooking runs deep.

'I always remember baking from a young age with my grandma; it's something I continued to do my whole life, but after year 12 finished I really found my love for baking as a career,' Ms Matheson added.

The skilled baker loves to create 'all things fruity', and said her favourite treats to make are jam doughnuts and mini lemon cupcakes.

But while it may seem that success has come easy, Ms Matheson admitted there are challenges.

'It is very hard being so young, navigating the business world as well as managing the production side of things.

'I have learnt that you just need to get up and keep moving forward whenever you face hard times.'

Ms Matheson stressed the importance of patience and staying true to yourself

Asked what advice she would give to other young aspiring culinary artists, Ms Matheson stressed the importance of patience and staying true to yourself.

'Be creative, be original and follow your passions.

'It won't happen overnight, but keep persisting and building your brand to be the best it can be.'
